After the October FOMC Meeting: What Could Drive Bitcoin and Stocks Next?

By: WEEX|10/29/2026 07:00:00

TL;DR

  • The Fed held rates at 3.75%–4.00% on October 28, with two policymakers preferring a hike. The next scheduled meeting is December 8–9.
  • Stock indexes finished modestly higher, and Bitcoin initially edged up after the decision. Individual earnings reactions subsequently diverged.
  • Before December, inflation, employment and market rates will shape the shared backdrop. Corporate earnings and crypto demand will help determine which assets benefit.
  • A recovery, renewed selling and continued range trading are all conditional scenarios. The key is whether price action and underlying evidence confirm each other.

The Fed paused, but it did not settle the next direction for Bitcoin or stocks. Before December's meeting, markets will need evidence that inflation is easing without a sharp deterioration in growth.

For Bitcoin, that means watching financial conditions alongside crypto demand. For stocks, the same rate backdrop must be weighed against profits, margins and spending plans. A favorable macro shift could help both, but neither market needs to follow the other on every move.

What Did the Fed Decision Change?

The October 28 decision left the target range at 3.75%–4.00% in a 10–2 vote. Both dissenters preferred a quarter-point increase. The statement described economic activity as strong and inflation as elevated.

Policy is on hold, but inflation remains unresolved.

Reuters' closing market report put the implied probability of a December hike at 85%, up from 78.3% the previous day. That was an October 28 snapshot, not a live probability or a Fed commitment.

The next question is whether incoming information strengthens or weakens that expectation. Financing conditions can change before the policy rate does, as bond yields and market pricing respond to new data.

What Do Bitcoin and Stock Reactions Tell Us?

The S&P 500 and Nasdaq closed October 28 (20:00 UTC) up 0.28% and 0.27%, respectively. Bitcoin also initially edged higher after the Fed announcement, according to CoinDesk’s update published at 18:05 UTC on October 28, 2026. These observations cover different windows: full regular-session index returns and an early post-decision Bitcoin response. They are not matched-period performance comparisons.

Earnings then added a separate influence. CoinDesk reported Microsoft up 3.8% after hours at 20:09 UTC, while Alphabet was down about 7% at 20:14 UTC.

Their opposite reactions under the same rate backdrop show why one stock's decline should not automatically become a bearish Bitcoin signal.

Before December, a more useful comparison will be whether Bitcoin and broader equities strengthen together as tightening expectations ease. If only one advances, examine the asset-specific evidence: corporate outlooks for stocks, and flows or positioning for Bitcoin.

Could Bitcoin and Stocks Rally Before the Next FOMC?

A more constructive scenario would combine easing inflation, less restrictive rate expectations and resilient growth.

For stocks, lower yields could ease valuation pressure, especially for businesses whose expected profits lie further in the future. The case would be stronger if earnings expectations held up and gains broadened beyond a small group of companies.

For Bitcoin, improving financial conditions would need confirmation from demand. Sustained spot Bitcoin ETF inflows across completed sessions and an ability to retain gains would strengthen the recovery argument.

The sequence to watch is:
Softer inflation → reduced tightening expectations → supportive market rates → sustained buying.
Each link needs checking. A softer inflation headline is less persuasive if yields stay elevated or markets quickly give back the initial advance.

This scenario would weaken if earnings expectations deteriorated, crypto flows turned negative or gains repeatedly failed to hold. Lower yields caused by severe growth fears could also accompany falling risk assets, so declining yields alone are insufficient.

What Could Put Both Markets Under Pressure?

Persistent inflation or stronger-than-expected wage pressure could reinforce the case for tighter policy. Rising shorter-term yields would help confirm that investors had reassessed the policy path.

Stocks would face a tougher combination if higher financing costs arrived alongside weaker earnings guidance. Businesses funding large investment programs could receive particular scrutiny over cash generation and spending.

Bitcoin would face its own test: whether sustained fund outflows or weaker spot buying accompanied the macro repricing. If a decline also involved liquidations, forced position closures could amplify the move.

The interpretation would change if tightening expectations stabilized, corporate guidance improved or crypto demand recovered.

An eventual hike is not automatically a new bearish shock. Its impact depends on how much was already expected and what the accompanying guidance implies for subsequent policy.

Could Bitcoin and Stocks Keep Moving in Different Directions?

Yes. Mixed signals can produce sideways markets, sector rotation or divergence.

Stocks might advance on stronger earnings while Bitcoin struggles with crypto-specific selling. Bitcoin could recover on stronger demand even as disappointing company reports weigh on equities.

Neither pattern alone proves a lasting change in their relationship.

For broad equities, watch market breadth and earnings revisions alongside the index level. For Bitcoin, assess spot demand and whether moves beyond recent trading ranges persist. Use consistent time windows when comparing them.

A single stock's after-hours move should not be treated as equivalent to a broad index return or Bitcoin's 24-hour performance.

Which Events Matter Before December?

The next scheduled FOMC meeting is December 8–9, with updated economic projections. Earlier employment and inflation releases provide opportunities for expectations to change. [2][4]

PCE inflation, subsequent labor-market reports and corporate updates will also matter. The test after each release is whether expectations changed, whether rates confirmed the change, and whether Bitcoin and stocks sustained their responses.

Trade Different Market Views Through One WEEX Account

The comparison creates two questions: is the macro backdrop improving, and which assets have their own reasons to move?

A trader anticipating easier financial conditions may assess both crypto and traditional-market exposures. Someone focused on earnings may reach a different conclusion about a stock-linked contract while keeping their Bitcoin outlook unchanged.

WEEX TradFi brings perpetual contracts on traditional assets alongside crypto through one WEEX account. Supported TradFi contracts use USDT margin, allowing traders to express different market views within the same platform.

A TradFi perpetual provides contractual price exposure without ownership of the underlying shares. Leverage can amplify losses and lead to liquidation. Review each instrument's availability, trading hours, fees, funding and margin requirements before trading. Multiple positions can share macro risks, so multi-asset access does not automatically provide diversification.

FAQ

Is a Fed Rate Hold Bullish for Bitcoin and Stocks?

Not automatically. It depends on prior expectations, guidance, financial conditions and asset-specific fundamentals. A pause can coexist with expectations of further tightening.

When Is the Next FOMC Meeting?

The next scheduled meeting is December 8–9, 2026, with updated economic projections.

What Could Support a Rally Before December?

Easing inflation without a sharp growth slowdown would improve the backdrop. Resilient earnings would strengthen the stock-market case; sustained crypto demand would strengthen Bitcoin's.

Can Bitcoin Rise While Stocks Fall?

Yes. Different flows, positioning and company-specific developments can produce different outcomes. Compare equivalent time windows before drawing conclusions.
