Bensent Supports U.S. Use of Financial Power to Advance Foreign Policy
U.S. Treasury Secretary Bensent expressed support for using financial power as a tool of foreign policy to advance the interests of U.S. allies, particularly in overseas financial and political affairs. Bensent noted that the U.S. balance sheet can be leveraged to implement foreign policy, with the goal of establishing alliances in the Western Hemisphere. He mentioned that Argentina is the first country to adopt this approach and described the Milei administration's policies as sound. Last year, the U.S. provided billions of dollars in aid to Argentina to help stabilize its currency and support Milei ahead of the midterm elections. Bensent's remarks indicate the Trump administration's willingness to use fiscal resources to influence foreign politics and economies.
