Bitcoin remains stable as Japan's rate decision impacts yen shorts
Bitcoin's leverage metrics showed little reaction following the Bank of Japan's decision on Friday. The yen short position increased from 152125 contracts on July 21 to 163412 by July 28, while the board voted 8-1 to maintain the overnight rate near 1.0%, with Hajime Takata as the sole dissenting vote for 1.25%. The latest Commodity Futures Trading Commission report indicated 101271 non-commercial longs and 264683 shorts as of July 28, leaving speculators net short 163412 contracts, an increase of 11287 from the previous week. Long positions decreased by 6319, while shorts rose by 4968. If traders exit their positions, the yen short could rebound sharply, impacting leveraged Bitcoin positions. USD/JPY remained relatively stable around the BOJ's reference rates, with minor fluctuations noted. Coinbase BTC-USD saw a slight gain of 0.1%, while Binance BTCUSDT dropped by 0.53%. Deribit reported minimal activity, with funding rates approaching zero and Bitcoin volatility slightly decreasing. The BOJ's July outlook predicts inflation excluding fresh food to exceed 2% in the latter half of fiscal 2026, adding weight to Takata's dissenting vote. No significant spillover effects were observed on Friday.
