Bitcoin Trials a Lighter Way to Verify Transactions

A full Bitcoin node downloads and verifies the entire blockchain. A lightweight node, on the other hand, only needs to obtain the necessary information to verify the transactions that interest it. To do this without downloading all the blocks, it can use the compact block filters defined in Bitcoin Improvement Proposals 157 and 158 (BIP-157 and BIP-158).

The filters act as a summary of each block. The lightweight node can check if a block contains elements related to its own addresses or scripts without initially downloading all its content. In this way, it reduces the volume of information it needs to query from other nodes.

The current system of Bitcoin lightweight nodes generates a filter for each block, while a new proposal seeks to further reduce that download by creating filters that group several blocks.

The developer known as Optout presented a proposal on July 22 in the Delving Bitcoin forum to create filters corresponding to ranges of blocks, for example, groups of 256 blocks.

The lightweight node would first download the filter corresponding to each range. If that filter does not match the scripts the node is looking for, it could discard that entire group without downloading the individual filters. If it finds a match, it would download the filters of each block within the range and continue with the procedure currently used.

According to simulations by Optout, cited by the Bitcoin Optech Newsletter #420 on August 28, 2026, grouping filters into ranges of 256 blocks reduced the total download by 70% to 80%, depending on the type of transactions analyzed. That range turned out, according to the author himself, to be the best possible balance, because grouping into larger segments increases the download cost again.

The results still do not represent the behavior of the system on the actual blockchain. The proposal uses simulated data, and the author himself raises the need to conduct analyses on real Bitcoin data before determining what the optimal size of the ranges would be.

The reduction of data introduces a significant difference in how the lightweight node performs its queries.

With the current scheme, the node can download individual filters from all blocks, even though most do not contain information related to its transactions. With range filters, the node first queries complete groups and only delves into those that produce a match.

This behavior could allow the node providing the filters to observe which ranges of blocks spark interest in the user. If several additional queries focus on certain ranges, that information could allow inferring approximately which period of the chain the lightweight node is examining.

Therefore, the proposal does not necessarily eliminate the protection offered by compact filters but changes the pattern of queries and, potentially, the information that a server node can deduce from that pattern. The concrete impact on privacy has not yet been defined by the developers.

The proposal is still in a preliminary stage and does not have an implementation or official identification as a BIP. For now, the main result is that Bitcoin could significantly reduce the volume of data needed for certain lightweight nodes. The next step will be to determine if that bandwidth saving maintains an acceptable level of privacy when the mechanism is tested on the actual chain.
