Bull Secures €387.8 Million Contract for LUMI-AI Supercomputer
Bull has been selected by EuroHPC and the LUMI AI Factory consortium to build LUMI-AI, a supercomputer dedicated to AI valued at €387.8 million. This contract is the largest in Bull's history, coming just months after its acquisition by the French state. The supercomputer is set to be deployed in the second half of 2027 at the CSC data center in Kajaani, Finland, and is expected to increase the AI computing capacity of the current LUMI supercomputer by tenfold. It is funded equally by EuroHPC and a consortium that includes Finland, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Norway, and Poland. LUMI-AI is the sixth supercomputer commissioned under EuroHPC's AI Factories program, which has a budget of €8.2 billion for 2021-2027. The computing core of LUMI-AI will be powered by AMD chips, while storage will be provided by IBM and networking by Nokia. This choice marks a shift from Jupiter, the first European supercomputer, which used Nvidia chips. AMD is establishing itself as the preferred supplier for European public supercomputers.
