Diesel Prices Hit Record Highs, Fed Faces Inflation Challenges

On September 25, Torsten Slok, Chief Economist at Apollo Global Management, warned that record diesel prices could pose an inflation threat beyond the Federal Reserve's expectations, as fuel costs are being passed through to the core Consumer Price Index. Slok pointed out that the impact of diesel-related transportation costs differs from that of gasoline prices; transporting goods is crucial for economic activity, and demand is inelastic, meaning price increases will be passed on to businesses and consumers. The impact of rising diesel prices is particularly critical following the Fed's first interest rate hike since 2023, with current inflation levels still significantly above the central bank's 2% target. Slok believes the Fed cannot view the rise in diesel prices as a temporary phenomenon, as it will affect core inflation categories through spillover effects.
