European Commission Calls for Agreement on Funding Patriot Missiles for Ukraine
The European Commission expects a swift decision from member states regarding the funding for the purchase of Patriot interceptor missiles for Ukraine. Ukraine has already submitted a request to acquire these missiles, as stated by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. Balazs Ujvari, the European Commission's spokesperson for budget and financing, noted that the purchase of Patriot missiles requires separate approval since the missiles are produced outside the EU and Ukraine. Under the €90 billion loan for 2026-2027, defense procurements should primarily be made within the EU and Ukraine. Ujvari emphasized that the European Commission insists on an urgent resolution to this issue, but the final decision rests with the member states. The delivery timelines for the missiles depend on the terms of the contracts that Ukraine will enter into with the supplier. The procurement approval process can take anywhere from a few days to one or two weeks. After agreeing on the list, the European Commission reviews the contracts, after which payments are made. Ukraine is requesting more than €2 billion from the €90 billion EU loan to finance the Patriot missiles.
