European Regulators Warn of Quantum Risk by 2030

European financial regulators warn about the risk that quantum computing poses to cryptographic systems, including Bitcoin. In its Autumn 2026 Risk and Vulnerabilities Report, the Joint Committee of the European Supervisory Authorities (ESAs) included quantum computing among the technological risks to monitor. It is estimated that 6.9 million BTC, valued at approximately $586 billion, could be exposed to future quantum attacks. The threat could materialize before quantum computers reach viable commercial applications, requiring years of preparation to protect sensitive information. Coins linked to old addresses could have their public keys exposed, allowing a quantum computer to derive the private keys. The Bitcoin network would not be able to solve the problem with a unilateral update; changes accepted by participants would be needed. The EU's post-quantum roadmap urges member states to begin the transition before the end of 2026 and to protect high-risk use cases by 2030. The warning is preventive, as there is currently no computer capable of breaking Bitcoin's cryptography.
