Former Hong Kong Bank Manager Sentenced to Four Years for $1.6 Billion Fake Letters of Credit and Cryptocurrency Bribery
A former bank official in Hong Kong has been sentenced to four years in prison for issuing fake letters of credit worth over $1.6 billion and accepting approximately $470,000 in cryptocurrency bribes. The defendant, Lam Chun-yin, 32, who was a client relationship manager at China Construction Bank (Asia) at the time of the offense, pleaded guilty in the regional court. Judge Ernest Lin Kam-hung stated that even for a first offense, a deterrent sentence must be imposed, considering the severity of the crime and its impact on society. The judge pointed out that the banking and insurance sectors are pillars of Hong Kong's economy, and the scheme undermined Hong Kong's status as a global financial center. The Hong Kong Independent Commission Against Corruption has obtained arrest warrants for other individuals involved in the case. Meanwhile, the Hong Kong Monetary Authority has launched a framework to assess banks' preparedness for quantum computing threats, in line with Hong Kong's expansion of tokenized deposits, digital assets, and blockchain settlement applications, aiming for industry-wide readiness by 2030.
