German Bitcoin researcher and Lightning Network developer René Pickhardt has stated that he has accumulated a small amount of BTC despite believing in Bitcoin's long-term potential. This decision is driven by concerns over security and key management in his own storage methods rather than price expectations. Pickhardt noted that even if private keys are generated correctly, storage conditions and software bugs can pose additional risks. A well-known figure in the Bitcoin community, Pickhardt is particularly recognized for his work on the Lightning Network. His statement came after one of the largest hardware wallet security incidents in Bitcoin's history. Researchers discovered a vulnerability in the Coldcard hardware wallet, resulting in the theft of 1,755 BTC, which exceeded 100 million dollars. One of the victims lost approximately 1.6 million dollars despite storing his wallet in a bank vault. Security researchers at Block identified that the issue stemmed from the implementation of the random number generator used in the wallet seed phrase production. Pickhardt's remarks resonated with those who believe that securely storing Bitcoin is daunting for many users.
