Hacker Who Leaked GTA 6 Created a Coin, Soared 20 Times in a Day
Grand Theft Auto VI (GTA 6) is arguably the most well-known video game on the planet that needs no introduction. Players have waited twelve years, with multiple delays, and it is finally set to be officially released this November. Rumored to have a production cost of up to $2 billion—about the same as the Burj Khalifa, the tallest building in the world. A single game costing as much as a skyscraper.
With a starting pre-sale price of $100, players are voting with their wallets. Market analysis firm Sensor Tower reports that total pre-orders have surpassed 4.38 million, and there is a rare phenomenon of "high-end version hot sales": 89% of pre-order players directly purchased the ultimate edition. Rough calculations show that pre-sales have already generated over $400 million.
Initially, it was thought that everyone was just waiting for the publisher to gradually build up excitement until the game could finally be played in November, but unexpectedly, some game footage was leaked.
At first, people thought it was just a "minor incident"
When the first wave of leaked videos came out, players were relatively relaxed: they treated it as "free previews" and took a look at what Rockstar had secretly been working on.
Some people actually noticed the details. In a recent clip of supercar driving, players discovered that when slamming the brakes at high speed, the brake discs would glow red due to overheating and then slowly cool down; reflections on water surfaces, automatic locking of car doors after smashing windows to steal cars... These "details that only knowledgeable people could notice" made many players marvel at Rockstar's technical prowess.
However, in recent days, things started to take a turn for the worse.
Rumors emerged that an organization calling itself Cyberleek announced they would release a PC download client for GTA 6—meaning that everyone could play this $2 billion masterpiece without spending a dime. If true, this would be the craziest piracy incident in gaming history.
This claim was quickly debunked: gaming media Insider Gaming formally retracted its related report and apologized, admitting that it was fabricated images and discussions from a fake account that could not withstand verification. The real Cyberleek has only released short video clips and map screenshots, never a complete downloadable PC client. The links online claiming to be "full version downloads" are almost all viruses and trojans.
Although the news was false, Cyberleek had prepared a very cutting-edge marketing scheme for their leak, launching a meme coin.
Hacker Attack Turned into Web3 Marketing
The usual script is: something happens, it gains fame, and someone rides the wave to create a meme coin. Cyberleek flipped the order completely—they launched the coin first, then leaked.
The timeline is as follows:
· August 14: They spent about 13,878 ARIO to permanently buy the cyberleek-related domain on Arweave. At this point, there was no GTA 6 leak yet.
· August 15: The $CYBERLEEK token was officially created, with a one-time minting of 1 billion tokens, of which 27% (about 270 million) were transferred to a reserve account; then it launched a liquidity pool on Raydium, with an initial fully diluted valuation of only about $55,000.
· August 16: They quietly posted on X to announce the launch, with almost no attention, and the trading volume was dead for the next two days.
· August 18: The first wave of actual GTA 6 footage and map screenshots appeared—each video had uncut watermarks and QR codes pointing to the official website and token. That day, trading volume surged: within an hour, it rose about 13 times, with a single-hour transaction volume exceeding $5 million.
On-chain investigations also revealed that the same starting wallet network (which transferred about 156 SOL through around 20 temporary wallets since August 13) simultaneously paid for the domain registration, token creation, website deployment, and distribution of leaked content—all expenses were prepared in advance by the same group of people.
Cyberleek leaked GTA 6 footage
As of today, this coin has risen about 20 times: starting from a low of about $0.0014, the 24-hour increase once reached 17 times, with a market cap of nearly $29 million.
Even more clever marketing moves followed. On August 22, Cyberleek publicly burned about 270 million developer-reserved tokens, accounting for about 27% of the total supply, claiming it was to "prove they wouldn't dump and run," yet they still retained tokens worth over $500,000 and continued to profit from transaction fees, with estimates suggesting they have made $70,000.
This coin even has a legitimate "token economy": holding tokens allows voting on what content to leak next. Tokens can be sent to a designated address to vote; if "Airplane Day" wins, they will release airplane footage, and the leaked videos are filled with QR codes for the coin. The official website slogan is straightforward: "The higher the market cap = more leaks."
Another Incident in India: Apple Just Stumbled Here
The source of this leak points to Rockstar's Indian branch. Cyberleek gained access to the Xbox development version of GTA 6 by hacking into this location.
India has already had numerous incidents this year, as just two months ago, Apple faced a similar stumble in India. In June 2026, Apple's core supplier, Tata Electronics, suffered a cyberattack, with 630GB and over 200,000 files uploaded to the dark web, exposing the supplier list for the iPhone 18 Pro, component details, and drop test photos.
Global tech companies have moved their R&D and production processes to India, but they have also brought along the vulnerability of supply chain security. While headquarters are well-protected, third-party branches and factories are always the softest targets in the eyes of attackers.

Netflix's 6-Hour Exclusive and YouTube's Secret Joy
This grand drama has an unfortunate player: Netflix.
Rockstar made an unprecedented decision: to give Netflix an extended preview of GTA 6, which will premiere exclusively on Netflix for 6 hours on August 27, before being available on platforms like YouTube. Turning the game PV into a paid streaming exclusive is unprecedented in gaming history.
Netflix is pushing hard because it is in a direct battle with YouTube. Reports indicate that YouTube offered exclusive agreements worth millions of dollars, with the condition that top creators "do not post content on Netflix"; creators who refuse to sign may even face penalties in terms of visibility.
Now that hackers have leaked GTA 6 content everywhere, the "6-hour exclusive" that Netflix paid a high price for has been largely undermined, and the one secretly enjoying this the most is probably YouTube: the trailer will eventually be available for free, while the "biggest game leak in history" has generated buzz without costing them a dime. Although Rockstar is officially sticking to its plans, the commercial value of this paid exclusive has already been halved by Cyberleek's few free videos.
