H&M and Other Brands Abandon Plus-Size Clothing

Global fashion retailers, including H&M, are halting the production of plus-size clothing. Officially, companies explain this as a business optimization, but experts link the changes to the popularity of weight-loss drugs GLP-1, such as Ozempic and Wegovy. Analysts note that 21% of American households and 9% of British households are taking these medications, which affects the demand for larger sizes. H&M has confirmed the removal of sizes 3XL and 4XL from its online catalog, and a reduction in assortment is also observed at Aritzia, Mango, and Zara. Retailers are avoiding linking their decisions to weight-loss drugs to avoid accusations of abandoning inclusivity. Specialized brands like Torrid are closing stores, and Destination XL Group reports an 8% drop in sales. In the UK, the brand Live Unlimited London has gone bankrupt, while in Australia, Mosaic Brands has closed around 700 locations. Experts note that consumers with fluctuating weights are opting for cheaper alternatives. Ultra-fast fashion brands like Shein and Temu continue to offer budget-friendly plus-size clothing.
