Japan's National Debt Interest Costs Expected to Reach 16.6 Trillion Yen in Fiscal Year 2027
The Japanese government is expected to incur national debt interest costs of 16.6 trillion yen in fiscal year 2027, leading to increased fiscal pressure and tensions in the national bond market. The Ministry of Finance is considering setting the assumed interest rate for debt repayment calculations at 3.8%, which is higher than the 3.0% used in the fiscal year 2026 budget. The yield on 10-year Japanese government bonds reached 2.945% on August 18 and is currently presented at 2.89%. The Ministry of Finance has stated that out of the 122.3 trillion yen in general account expenditures for fiscal year 2026, 31.3 trillion yen is allocated for national debt. If interest costs exceed 16 trillion yen, rising interest rates could put pressure on other budget items such as social security, defense, and growth investments. The Bank of Japan is in the process of normalizing its monetary policy and has been reducing its bond purchases since the summer of 2024. The rise in Japanese government bond yields affects the cost of yen financing and global bond yields, drawing attention in the cryptocurrency market as well. The budget for fiscal year 2027 is expected to be finalized through government proposal formulation and deliberation by the National Diet.
