Kirsten Gillibrand Calls for Inclusion of Presidential Cryptocurrency Profit Ban in Market Structure Bill
On August 23, U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand stated that Congress should prohibit the President, their spouse, and senior officials from issuing, initiating, or profiting from cryptocurrencies during their terms, and called for enforceable ethical bans to be included in the digital asset market structure bill. A survey revealed that 63% of respondents believe that Trump and his family's cryptocurrency profit activities are inappropriate, while 32% consider them appropriate. Trump disclosed in his annual report that cryptocurrency-related income exceeded $1.4 billion in 2025. The controversy has extended to the Senate's "Digital Asset Market Clarification Act" (CLARITY Act), which is set for its first procedural vote in the Senate on September 15, requiring 60 votes to advance; Gillibrand stated she would not support allowing the President to profit from public office with taxpayer support.
