Ledger CTO disputes 30% Bitcoin quantum risk estimate
Ledger CTO Charles Guillemet challenged the claim that only about 30% of Bitcoin is at risk from quantum computing attacks. He noted that public keys can be exposed through various means, including xpubs, devices, PSBTs, logs, and backups, rather than solely through spent on-chain outputs. Guillemet referenced Glassnode data indicating that approximately 30.2% of Bitcoin has spent public keys exposed on-chain. He also pointed out that public keys are revealed during Bitcoin transfers before transaction confirmations. He emphasized that if sufficiently fast quantum computers become available, merely hiding public keys will not suffice, and Bitcoin will need to transition to a quantum-resistant cryptographic system.
