Luigi Mangione Pleads Guilty to the Murder of UnitedHealth Group CEO

Luigi Mangione pleaded guilty in court to his federal criminal case, avoiding the trial stage. This move may allow him to dismiss the murder charges in New York State and postpone the upcoming state trial. Mangione faces both federal and state charges. In January, a judge dismissed the federal murder charges against him, eliminating the possibility of the death penalty; however, if the remaining two federal stalking charges are upheld, he could still face life imprisonment. The state charges include second-degree murder, illegal possession of a weapon, and possession of false identification, to which Mangione has pleaded not guilty. Resolving the federal case may allow him to seek dismissal of the second-degree murder charge under New York State law, although prosecutors are expected to oppose this. The state trial is scheduled for September 8, and if convicted of second-degree murder, Mangione could face 25 years to life in prison. On December 4, 2024, UnitedHealth Group CEO Brian Thompson was shot and killed in New York City, and Mangione was arrested five days later in Pennsylvania.
