OpenAI Discovers Remote Code Execution Vulnerability in Brotli Compression Library
OpenAI posted on the X platform that it has discovered a vulnerability in the Brotli compression library that allows for remote code execution without authentication during a red team exercise. This library is built into software such as Node.js, Bun, and Envoy. Attackers can take over unpatched servers by sending malicious compressed data or compromise clients that accept compressed data through malicious servers. The root cause of the issue was fixed in the Brotli source code in February this year, but it was not identified as a security vulnerability at that time, and software that includes this library needs to be updated accordingly. The vulnerability is identified as CVE-2026-111497, and Node.js released a patched version on October 21.
