President Trump Freezes Approximately 156 Billion Yen in Fraud-Related Cryptocurrency
On October 21, President Trump announced at a cybercrime prevention meeting at the White House that approximately $1 billion (about 156 billion yen) in cryptocurrency related to overseas fraud organizations has been frozen. The frozen cryptocurrency was referred to as "cyber currency," but specific details regarding the types of assets and the amounts frozen were not disclosed. The U.S. Department of Justice announced on September 9 that the amount of cryptocurrency frozen by the fraud task force "Scam Center Strike Force" reached approximately $938 million (about 146.3 billion yen). This task force was established in 2025 and is working in collaboration with the FBI and others to investigate fraud organizations in Southeast Asia. In the United States, crimes exploiting cryptocurrency have become a serious issue, with reported damages reaching approximately $11.366 billion (about 1.7731 trillion yen) in 2025. Trump has signed an executive order to strengthen crackdowns on cross-border fraud organizations and has directed the establishment of a system for returning seized funds to victims.
