Scandal After the 2026 World Cup, South Korea Coach Appears Before Parliament

South Korea was eliminated in the group stage of the 2026 World Cup, finishing in third place with only 3 points, obtained after a 2-1 victory against the Czech Republic. However, the team could not replicate this success, losing to Mexico and South Africa, resulting in one of the biggest disappointments in Asian football. Following the elimination, Hong Myung-bo resigned as head coach and Chung Mong-gyu as president of the Korea Football Association. Both appeared before Parliament to apologize for the poor results, where Myung-bo took responsibility and denied receiving preferential treatment in his hiring. Additionally, he called for a restructuring of South Korean football. The social outrage over the elimination led to a significant police presence, and Myung-bo had to leave the country for safety, currently being in the United States.
