Tesla's Optimus Production Faces Bottlenecks, Weekly Target of 20,000 Units Requires Over a Year
Tesla's humanoid robot Optimus has begun initial production in Fremont, but there is still a gap to large-scale delivery. Musk pointed out that the hands are the most challenging hardware aspect for the robot, requiring improvements in specialized gears, finger durability, tactile sensor protection, and fine grasping capabilities. Additionally, the onboard AI and software are not yet mature enough to reliably perform open-ended, non-preprogrammed tasks. Tesla plans to showcase relevant task capabilities in the next one to two months and aims to integrate the AI5 chip into Optimus around April 2027. Musk stated that the computing power of AI5 is about ten times that of AI4, but actual performance depends on the synergy between hardware and software and real task validation. In terms of production, Tesla plans to manufacture about 10,000 to 20,000 robots for practice and training, with an annualized production rate of 20,000 units per week expected to take at least a year, if not longer. The company's goal is to deliver to external customers around the end of 2027, but the reliability of the hands, the generalization ability of the AI, and the ramp-up of the production line remain major uncertainties.
