The Witcher 3 to Receive a Free Remaster with Xbox Play Anywhere
CD Projekt RED announced a free remaster of The Witcher 3 set for September 2026, featuring gameplay and graphical improvements, Xbox Play Anywhere compatibility, and a new expansion planned for 2027.
- The remaster will arrive on September 29, 2026, and will be free for those who already own The Witcher 3 on various platforms.
- The update will include enhancements to combat, exploration, artificial intelligence, skills, lighting, and technologies such as DLSS 4.5 and FSR 4.0.
- CD Projekt RED also unveiled Songs of the Past, an expansion that will take Geralt to the kingdom of Letten in 2027.
CD Projekt RED announced a remastered version of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt that will be released on September 29, 2026, and will be available at no additional cost for those who already own the game. The update will include the expansions Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine, aiming to renew the complete experience rather than just the base game.
The company presented the news during Gamescom 2026, an event where updates related to the Xbox ecosystem were also disclosed. According to Windows Central, the remaster will be free for owners of The Witcher 3 on GOG, Steam, Epic Games Store, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S, while it will also be available for pre-order on Battle.net and Nintendo Switch 2.
The launch takes on additional significance for Microsoft players due to the inclusion of Xbox Play Anywhere. This feature will bridge the gap between the versions for Xbox Series X|S and Xbox Ally, allowing the remastered edition to have broader integration within the company's device ecosystem.
CD Projekt RED also confirmed support for AMD FSR 4.0 on Xbox Ally X, an image reconstruction technology that can help boost performance on compatible portable devices. The update will combine this feature with other graphical tools, although the final performance will depend on the hardware and settings chosen by each player.
A Renewal That Goes Beyond Graphics
The package will include an improved combat flow, with new finishing moves and skills that will change the way players confront enemies. The company is also preparing changes to traversal, with jumps, platforms, and more dynamic movements, a decision aimed at making open-world exploration more flexible.
The artificial intelligence of monsters will receive adjustments to provide them with new movements and behaviors. The riding system will also be remodeled, while looting systems, interface interactions, and tutorials will undergo modernization aimed at reducing friction for both new and veteran players.
Among the progression changes is a complete overhaul of the skill tree, inspired by Cyberpunk 2077. The Witcher 3 will also incorporate armor transmogrification, a feature that will allow players to modify the appearance of their gear without necessarily sacrificing the gameplay properties of the pieces used.
The photo mode will be improved, and the update will add high dynamic range adjustments, renewed lighting, and revised spell effects. On high-end systems, CD Projekt RED also plans to include ray tracing and hair with ray tracing, changes aimed at providing a more detailed visual representation of the continent.
New Technologies for Different Platforms
The remaster will incorporate DLSS 4.5 and AMD FSR 4.0, two technologies aimed at improving image quality and performance through reconstruction techniques. The presence of both options reflects the intention to offer an update capable of adapting to PC configurations and devices with varying capabilities.
Support for FSR 4.0 on Xbox Ally X is particularly relevant because handheld devices must balance resolution, power consumption, and frame rate. The news does not specify performance figures, so it is not possible to anticipate a concrete rate, but it does confirm that CD Projekt RED is explicitly considering the portable environment.
Xbox Play Anywhere represents another significant change in the distribution of the title. This feature typically allows users to purchase a license compatible with consoles and PCs within the Xbox ecosystem, as well as synchronize certain elements across devices, although the exact details of this implementation for The Witcher 3 have not yet been developed in the announcement.
The arrival on Battle.net also expands the number of digital platforms from which the game can be purchased. Windows Central indicated that this availability would be part of a broader initiative to open Battle.net to external developers, with more details expected during BlizzCon 2026 in September.
A New Adventure for Geralt
Along with the remastering, CD Projekt RED presented the first teaser trailer for Songs of the Past, described as the third and final expansion of The Witcher 3. The content will take Geralt, known as the White Wolf, to the realm of Letten, a seemingly peaceful territory hiding dark secrets beneath its surface.
The expansion is scheduled for 2027, although the available information does not specify a more concrete release date. The teaser showed a tool resembling a hook that Geralt could use to attract enemies, in addition to naturally designed and twisted adversaries that will expand the game's repertoire of threats.
The presentation comes as CD Projekt RED maintains several high-profile projects in development. The company recently announced that The Witcher 4 is planned for 2028, while Cyberpunk 2 and other studio works continue to progress without additional dates provided for those projects.
The described timeline places The Witcher 3 at the center of a new support phase, even though the original game already holds a prominent place among the most recognized role-playing games. The free remaster, system improvements, and the 2027 expansion could attract both those returning to the continent and a generation of players who have yet to experience Geralt's adventure.
The Return of a Classic RPG
The Witcher 3 helped solidify CD Projekt RED as one of the most influential studios in the RPG genre, thanks to its open world, narrative missions, and the significance of player decisions. Its new edition is not limited to pursuing visual enhancement, as it also intervenes in core systems such as combat, progression, exploration, and artificial intelligence.
The strategy recalls the recovery process that Cyberpunk 2077 underwent after performance issues particularly affected the versions for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. According to Windows Central's material, half a decade after that launch, the game was renewed, received an award-winning television series, and expanded its content through updates.
In the case of The Witcher 3, free access for existing owners reduces one of the main barriers to returning to the title. It also prevents those who have already purchased the game from having to pay again to obtain the enhancements, although specific conditions may vary depending on the store and platform from which the license was acquired.
CD Projekt RED is betting on extending the lifespan of a production that already has an established community. If the company adheres to the announced schedule, September 29, 2026, will mark the beginning of a significant update, while Songs of the Past will expand the narrative universe throughout 2027.
