Trump Administration Considers Imposing Tariffs on Semiconductors, Offering Exemptions for Domestic Manufacturers
U.S. Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo stated that the Trump administration is considering a new round of tariffs on imported semiconductors, potentially increasing the tax burden on foreign chips to attract more semiconductor manufacturing to the United States. These tariffs may be implemented alongside tax relief measures for companies investing in domestic manufacturing. Raimondo pointed out that if production occurs in the U.S., companies will receive tariff exemptions; otherwise, they will be subject to tariffs. Trump previously imposed a 25% tariff on certain advanced semiconductors and ordered additional import tariffs on these chips in January of this year. The scope of the new tariffs may expand from semiconductors themselves to products containing chips, affecting imports of data center servers and consumer electronics.
