US and Iran Reject Proposal for Strait of Hormuz in Indirect Talks in Qatar
During indirect talks held on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, U.S. negotiators rejected Iran's proposal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, informing Iran that the waterway is not under its control and questioning Iran's qualifications to make such a proposal. In the discussions, U.S. envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner were in one room, while Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi was in another, with messages being relayed through Qatari mediators. Sources indicate that more indirect talks may take place before the conclusion of the General Assembly, but mediators are waiting for Trump to decide whether to continue this process or pursue other avenues.
