U.S. Crude Oil Shipments to Asia Expected to Reach 40 Million Barrels in September
Asian refiners are expected to nearly double their purchases of U.S. crude oil for September shipments compared to August. Due to procurement uncertainties of Middle Eastern crude, U.S. crude is heading to Asia as an alternative supply. The volume of crude oil from the U.S. to Asia in September is projected to exceed 40 million barrels, while August shipments are estimated at 22 million barrels. With the Iran conflict continuing for six months, Asian refiners facing disruptions in Middle Eastern crude supply are purchasing U.S. crude as a substitute. According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA), the operating rate of U.S. refineries reached 97.2% for the week ending August 14, and U.S. crude exports during the same period increased to 4.1 million barrels per day. The impact of the increased shipments to Asia on the overall U.S. export pace requires further analysis. China's crude oil import adjustments also affect the Asian supply and demand, with China's crude oil imports in July averaging 8.41 million barrels per day, a decrease of 24.3% compared to the same month last year. Whether the U.S. crude oil shipments for September will actually exceed 40 million barrels will be confirmed after the shipments are completed.
