US Dollar Loses 97% Value Since 1913, Bitcoin Offers Alternative
Since the Federal Reserve's establishment in 1913, the US dollar has lost about 97% of its purchasing power, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics CPI-U. A dollar from 1913 buys roughly 3 cents' worth of today's goods, equating to about 33 to 34 dollars in 2026. This figure reflects the official price index compounded over 113 years, influenced by major historical events and the end of gold convertibility in 1971. Bitcoin, created in response to this monetary system, has a cap of 21 million coins and a declining issuance schedule. As of early September 2026, Bitcoin trades near 79852, significantly below its October 2025 peak of 126080. Since its inception, Bitcoin's price has surged over 59000%, outperforming cash and often gold over full market cycles, though it can erase years of gains within months. Spot Bitcoin ETFs, approved in the US in 2024, have transformed Bitcoin into a more accessible asset, accumulating 55.62 billion in net inflows by September 4, with total net assets reaching 101.25 billion, about 6.33% of Bitcoin's market cap. Despite this, Bitcoin has not replaced the US dollar's role in global trade and wages. It offers savers an alternative to a currency that has lost significant purchasing power, but its effectiveness as a reserve asset or speculative investment varies by investor time horizon.
