US to buy back up to $6 billion in long-term government bonds on October 8
The U.S. Department of the Treasury plans to repurchase long-term government bonds on October 8 between 19:40 and 20:00 Dutch time. This involves government bonds with maturities of 20 to 30 years. A maximum of $6 billion has been mentioned, but this has not yet been officially confirmed. The buyback is part of a larger program announced on August 19, which increases the scale of such operations. The buyback provides market participants the opportunity to sell older government bonds that are less actively traded. The final purchase may be lower than the announced maximum. Investors are watching the impact of the buyback on bond yields, as higher yields make government bonds more attractive to risk-averse investors, which could reduce interest in crypto and stocks. The buyback is not a new purchasing program from the central bank and can be financed with proceeds from new loans. Inflation and expectations about future interest rate hikes also continue to influence the markets.
