Zuckerberg Rejects AI Slowdown Calls, Advocates for Independent Safety Measures
Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg opposed calls for a coordinated slowdown in artificial intelligence development, asserting that companies can implement safety measures independently. In a post on X, he emphasized that users desire trustworthy AI and that companies face liability risks if their systems cause harm. He cited Meta's decision to delay the Muse project as an example of a lab acting autonomously. Zuckerberg stated, "Labs face significant liability if their models cause harm, so they have a strong incentive to prevent this as well." He noted that Meta delayed Muse for several months to prioritize safety without waiting for competitors to follow suit. His comments came after Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei suggested slowing AI advancements, which received support from OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and Elon Musk. Zuckerberg highlighted that every lab has the responsibility to train models safely and can take necessary actions. He also mentioned that Meta Superintelligence Labs employs independent evaluators and called for a broader range of outside testers. Despite Meta's commitment to user service over recursive self-improvement, the company has faced safety issues, including a vulnerability in a third-party service related to Muse. The effectiveness of voluntary safety measures under competitive pressure remains uncertain, with experts advocating for independent oversight and enforceable standards. Zuckerberg concluded that maintaining a balance of power is crucial for a positive future.
