WalletConnect usually fails for four practical reasons: the wallet is on the wrong chain, the wallet or dApp is using an incompatible version, the browser or extensions are interfering, or the network is blocking the relay connection. The fastest fix is to check chain support, update the wallet, remove browser conflicts, switch networks or use a VPN if the relayer is blocked, and then rebuild the session by reconnecting from scratch.

Why Does WalletConnect Usually Stop Working?

WalletConnect is not a wallet by itself. It is a connection layer that lets a wallet and a decentralized app exchange requests securely. When that handshake fails, the problem is often not a single bug but a mismatch somewhere between the wallet, the dApp, the browser, and the network path used by the relay service.

In practice, most failed connections fall into four groups:

    Problem TypeCommon SymptomsMost Likely Fix
Chain mismatchUnsupported network, wrong chain ID, blank balancesSwitch to the network required by the dApp and confirm wallet support
Version or compatibility issueQR code scans but nothing happens, approval never appearsUpdate the wallet and confirm WalletConnect v2 support
Browser interferenceStuck loading, repeated pop-ups, no response after connectDisable extra wallet extensions, clear cache, try incognito or another browser
Relay or network blockageFailed to connect to relayer, timeout, endless spinnerChange Wi-Fi, try mobile data, or use a VPN and reconnect

If you use crypto services regularly and also trade on a centralized venue, some users keep a backup access path ready through the WEEX Exchange in case a wallet session or dApp connection is temporarily unavailable.

How Can You Check Whether the Wallet and Chain Match?

The most common direct cause of failure is a network mismatch. A dApp may require Ethereum, BNB Chain, Polygon, Arbitrum, or another supported chain, while your wallet is still pointed at a different one. When that happens, you may see “Unsupported network,” “Wrong chain ID,” or a connected screen with missing data.

Start with the dApp’s required network. Then verify two separate things:

    • Your wallet is currently switched to that network.
    • Your wallet actually supports that network through WalletConnect.

This distinction matters because WalletConnect is chain-agnostic at the protocol level, but some SDKs and wallet implementations still support only certain chains or features. A dApp can request a valid chain that your current wallet does not fully handle.

If the dApp does not clearly state the target network, disconnect first, switch networks in the wallet, and reconnect. Do not assume a connection succeeded just because the QR code scanned correctly.

What Recent WalletConnect Troubleshooting Signals Matter Right Now?

As of now, the most useful current troubleshooting signal is that many “frozen” connections are actually relay confirmation failures rather than simple front-end glitches. WalletConnect documentation defines a timeout as the relay not acknowledging session settlement within about 10 seconds, which helps explain why a connection can appear to hang even after approval.

Another important point is versioning. The older bridge.walletconnect.org endpoint is associated with WalletConnect v1, while newer setups rely on the relay system used by v2. If a wallet, dApp, or old integration still depends on legacy behavior, connection reliability drops sharply.

There have also been recurring reports of WebSocket failures involving WalletConnect relay endpoints and authorization errors tied to invalid project keys. For ordinary users, that means some failures are local and fixable, while others originate from the app’s relay configuration and can only be resolved by the dApp or wallet provider.

How Do WalletConnect Version Problems Cause Failed Connections?

Version mismatch remains one of the most overlooked causes. Many connection failures happen because the wallet is outdated, the dApp expects WalletConnect v2, or the user scans an expired QR code and never receives a valid session request.

Common signs of a version problem include:

    • The QR code scans but no approval screen appears.
    • The connection request disappears before you authorize it.
    • The dApp repeatedly asks you to connect again.
    • The wallet connects on one app but fails on another.

    The fixes are straightforward:

    1. Update the wallet app to the latest version.
    2. Refresh the dApp page and generate a new QR code.
    3. Approve the request promptly before the session expires.
    4. If the wallet still fails, test a wallet known to support WalletConnect v2.

Users often blame the dApp first, but an outdated mobile wallet is just as likely to be the real issue.

How Do Browser Extensions and Privacy Tools Break WalletConnect?

Browser environment problems are extremely common, especially on desktop. Multiple wallet extensions can compete for connection requests. Ad blockers, script blockers, strict privacy add-ons, and broken cached data can also interrupt the handshake or prevent the approval event from reaching the page.

If WalletConnect is stuck on loading, try this cleanup sequence:

    1. Disable all wallet extensions except the one you actually want to use.
    2. Temporarily pause ad blockers or privacy extensions on the dApp.
    3. Hard refresh the page.
    4. Clear site cache and local storage for that dApp if needed.
    5. Retry in incognito mode.
    6. If it still fails, use a different browser.

This sequence works because WalletConnect sessions may be stored locally, and stale pairing data can keep the browser trying to restore a broken or expired connection.

What Does Failed to Connect to Relayer Mean?

The message “Failed to connect to relayer” usually points to a network path problem, not a damaged wallet. WalletConnect relies on a relay service over WebSocket. If your ISP, office network, school network, firewall, antivirus suite, or regional routing blocks or throttles that WebSocket traffic, the session cannot complete.

    Typical clues include:

    • The same wallet works on mobile data but not on Wi-Fi.
    • The dApp loads, but the wallet pairing never finalizes.
    • The app shows timeout or relay connection errors.
    • The issue affects more than one wallet on the same network.

The fastest tests are practical rather than technical:

    1. Switch from Wi-Fi to mobile data.
    2. Try a different Wi-Fi network.
    3. Turn off firewall or filtering tools temporarily if safe to do so.
    4. Use a VPN to bypass route-level restrictions.

If the connection immediately works after changing networks, the problem was almost certainly at the relay transport layer.

How Can You Rebuild a Broken WalletConnect Session?

Session expiry is another major cause. Even if you approved a request earlier, the pairing may be stale, expired, or partially restored from local storage in a broken state. In those cases, reconnecting cleanly is often faster than trying to rescue the old session.

    Use this reset method:

    1. Disconnect the wallet from the dApp inside the dApp interface.
    2. Remove the dApp connection inside the wallet app.
    3. Close the browser tab and the wallet app completely.
    4. Reopen both and start a brand-new WalletConnect session.
    5. Scan the fresh QR code or tap the new deep link.
    6. Approve every wallet prompt without delay.

This process clears pairing confusion on both sides. It also prevents an old session request from competing with a new one.

What Should You Do When WalletConnect Connects but Nothing Loads?

A successful-looking connection with no balances, no positions, or no app response usually means one of three things: the wrong chain is selected, the dApp’s RPC endpoint is having issues, or the wallet connected but the session permissions do not match what the dApp requested.

To narrow it down, check the following:

    SymptomLikely CauseWhat to Try
Connected wallet, zero dataWrong networkSwitch to the exact chain required by the dApp
Balances missing intermittentlyRPC endpoint instabilityWait and retry or switch RPC if the wallet allows it
Buttons do nothing after connectPermission or session mismatchDisconnect fully and create a fresh session
Only one browser failsCached data or extension conflictUse incognito mode or a different browser

If the dApp itself is failing to respond, there may be nothing wrong with WalletConnect at all. In that case, testing the same wallet on another dApp can help isolate whether the issue is with the wallet, the relay path, or the app.

When Is the Problem on the dApp Side?

Sometimes the user cannot fix the issue because the dApp or wallet provider is misconfigured. Reports of WebSocket connection failures and authorization errors such as “invalid key” show that some failures come from relay setup or project configuration rather than user behavior.

Signs the problem may be on the app side include:

    • Multiple users report the same failure at the same time.
    • Different wallets all fail on one specific dApp.
    • The error appears immediately after connection, even on a clean browser and network.
    • The app triggers relay or authorization messages that normal users cannot control.

When those signs appear, the realistic next step is to wait, use an alternative access method, or contact the dApp support team with the exact error message and the chain you were trying to use.

What Is the Fastest WalletConnect Troubleshooting Checklist?

If you want the highest-probability sequence, use this order:

    1. Confirm the dApp’s required blockchain network.
    2. Switch the wallet to that exact chain.
    3. Update the wallet app and confirm WalletConnect v2 support.
    4. Refresh the QR code or deep link.
    5. Disable extra wallet extensions and privacy blockers.
    6. Hard refresh or open the dApp in incognito mode.
    7. Try a different browser.
    8. Switch from Wi-Fi to mobile data or another network.
    9. Use a VPN if relay access appears blocked.
    10. Delete the old session and reconnect from scratch.

This order works because it starts with the most common and easiest fixes before moving to network-level causes and full session resets.

How Can You Prevent WalletConnect Failures Next Time?

Prevention is mostly about reducing moving parts. Keep one primary wallet updated, avoid running several wallet extensions at once, and verify the chain before connecting. If a dApp is important to you, bookmark its correct network and connection flow so you do not have to troubleshoot from zero each time.

It also helps to remember that decentralized access depends on more components than a normal website login. Wallet app version, browser state, local storage, RPC health, relay reachability, and chain selection can all affect the result. The more consistent your setup, the fewer random failures you will see.
