Lagarde to Leave ECB in February 2027 as EU Succession Process Begins

The key change is procedural rather than an immediate shift in policy. If Lagarde leaves on the reported date in February 2027, attention will move from her remaining term to the formal EU appointment process. The ECB is consulted in that process but does not select the next president on its own. This matters for markets and policy watchers because expectations may begin to form well before an official nominee emerges, while the vice-president provides a built-in continuity mechanism should a vacancy arise.
Reuters reported on 29 October 2026 that European Central Bank President Christine Lagarde will step down on 7 February 2027, after informing the ECB Governing Council and European Council President António Costa. Reuters also said her term had been due to run until the end of October 2027, making this a reported early departure that brings the ECB succession process into focus.
What the reported February 2027 departure changes
The current development is a reported resignation announcement, not a formal decision on a successor. Reuters said Lagarde told the Governing Council and António Costa that she will leave on 7 February 2027, although her mandate had been scheduled to end in late October 2027.
That distinction matters because an early departure would bring the succession question forward. Rather than treating the ECB presidency as a routine end-of-term handover in late 2027, EU institutions would need to prepare for a replacement process months earlier. At this stage, however, there is no established formal shortlist, Council recommendation, or official ranking of candidates.
How the next ECB president is formally appointed
Article 283(2) of the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union sets out the process clearly: the Council recommends a candidate, the European Parliament and the ECB Governing Council are consulted, and the European Council appoints the ECB president by qualified majority. The same treaty provision states that the president serves a non-renewable eight-year term.
The European Parliament's procedural rules add that an ECB Executive Board nominee appears before the responsible committee, after which Parliament votes on the nomination, normally within two months of receiving it unless it decides otherwise. Parliament's role is consultative in law, but politically visible in practice.
| Item | Detail |
|---|---|
| Reported departure date | 7 February 2027 |
| Reported previous term end | End of October 2027 |
| Who formally appoints the ECB president | The European Council, by qualified majority |
| Required steps before appointment | Council recommendation, followed by consultation with the European Parliament and ECB Governing Council |
| If the president is absent | The vice-president chairs the Governing Council and Executive Board |
In practical terms, the next concrete trigger is not informal discussion of potential contenders, but a formal Council recommendation or consultation step. Until then, the succession story remains at the stage of a reported departure and a treaty-defined process, rather than an official nomination contest.
