A Comprehensive Overview of Web3 Infrastructure: Understanding the Future of Blockchain Through Five Core Technologies
As blockchain transitions from a niche single-chain ecosystem to a multi-chain scalable deployment, persistent issues such as congestion, lack of privacy, data silos, and high development barriers in traditional public chains continue to emerge. Five foundational technologies—layered scaling, zero-knowledge proofs, modular blockchains, cross-chain interoperability, and decentralized storage—collectively form the core infrastructure of modern Web3, breaking the performance and application constraints of traditional blockchains and propelling the industry into a new phase characterized by efficiency, security, privacy, and openness.
Layered scaling (Layer 2) is the core solution for Ethereum and mainstream public chains to address congestion and high transaction fees. Its essence lies in splitting on-chain functions, delegating massive transactions to execute and package on a second-layer network, while the Ethereum mainnet is responsible only for final settlement and data assurance. Currently, mainstream approaches are divided into two major Rollup routes: Optimistic Rollup, which assumes transactions are valid by default and relies on a 7-day challenge period for security, boasts a mature ecosystem and high compatibility; ZK-Rollup, which achieves mathematical verification through zero-knowledge proofs, allows for instant transaction validation and enhanced security. Meanwhile, data availability (DA) has become the core of Layer 2 security, determining the integrity and verifiability of second-layer network data and serving as a key factor in project security trade-offs.
Zero-knowledge proofs (ZK) are the underlying cryptographic technology for privacy and efficient verification in Web3, characterized by the ability to prove the truth of a fact without disclosing any original information. Today, ZK has formed a comprehensive deployment landscape: ZK-Rollup empowers Layer 2 scaling, ZK-EVM bridges the compatibility gap in the Ethereum ecosystem, and it has also extended into three major scenarios: ZK privacy payments, ZK on-chain identity, and ZK secure cross-chain interactions, enabling anonymous transfers, KYC without sensitive information, and trustless cross-chain interactions. Compared to OP scaling, ZK technology, with its zero-trust assumptions and instant finality advantages, has become the industry-recognized long-term ultimate technical route, and has already achieved large-scale commercial deployment.
Modular blockchains have fundamentally revolutionized the traditional monolithic public chain architecture by decoupling the originally coupled consensus, execution, settlement, and data layers into independent, pluggable modules. Compared to the shortcomings of monolithic chains, which face difficulties in upgrading, weak scaling, and high development costs, the modular architecture allows each component to perform its role and be flexibly combined, significantly breaking the blockchain trilemma. Dedicated DA chains represented by Celestia and Avail can provide low-cost data storage services for various Layer 2 networks and application chains. This "building block" approach has reduced the public chain development cycle from over a year to just a few weeks, greatly lowering the development barriers for Web3 infrastructure.
In the multi-chain era, cross-chain protocols and unified interoperability are essential for bridging on-chain silos. The industry mainstream is divided into three types of solutions: native multi-signature bridges, lightweight client cross-chain, and ZK cross-chain, with most theft incidents stemming from trust vulnerabilities in centralized multi-signature native bridges. Lightweight clients leverage on-chain consensus verification, while ZK cross-chain relies on cryptographic validation to achieve trustless secure interoperability. Additionally, universal messaging protocols like LayerZero and CCIP, along with unified asset standards such as xERC20, are addressing the industry pain points of fragmented multi-chain assets and lack of interoperability, constructing a unified interaction system across all chains.
Decentralized Web3 storage reconstructs the on-chain data foundation, with core representatives being IPFS, Filecoin, and Arweave, which are fundamentally different from centralized cloud storage that is prone to tampering and easy to take down. IPFS eliminates file 404 issues through content hash addressing, Filecoin achieves large-capacity commercial storage through mining incentives, and Arweave focuses on one-time payment for permanent archiving. Currently, this technology is widely applied in scenarios such as permanent certification of NFT metadata, decentralized storage of AI datasets, and on-chain data archiving, with the accompanying storage mining economic model forming a sustainable distributed data ecosystem.
Overall, the five foundational technologies complement each other: layered scaling enhances performance, ZK technology ensures privacy and security, modular architecture lowers development barriers, cross-chain enables a unified ecosystem, and decentralized storage solidifies the data foundation, collectively supporting Web3 in transitioning from concept to large-scale commercial use.
