Binance's Ethereum Open Interest in USD Halves to $5.8 Billion
Binance's Ethereum open interest currently stands at approximately $5.8 billion, halving from over $12 billion at its peak last summer. Analysis indicates that the open interest is denominated in USD, while the price of ETH has dropped by about half during the same period. When converted to ETH terms, the current open interest is about 2.5 million ETH, close to the 2.5 million ETH at its peak. The decline is primarily driven by price rather than traders closing positions. In terms of funding rates, the significant positive premiums seen in 2021 and early 2024 have disappeared, with the current funding rate just slightly above zero, indicating that neither bulls nor bears are overly crowded. Analysts believe that there remains a substantial leveraged ETH exposure in the market, but a lack of strong directional confidence limits the risk of a liquidation chain, while also suggesting that any breakout in either direction could accelerate quickly. Key signals include: a price increase coupled with a sharp rise in funding rates, indicating bullish crowding; a price decrease alongside an increase in open interest, indicating a growth in bearish positions.
