Bitcoin faces 20-day test as G7 plans diesel release
The G7 has initiated a plan to release emergency fuel reserves, including diesel, within 20 days to address energy shortages and inflation pressures. On Oct. 2, leaders agreed to make 100 million barrels available over four months, starting immediately, through the International Energy Agency. The impact on Bitcoin hinges on whether lower refined-fuel prices can influence inflation and interest-rate expectations. Bitcoin is sensitive to changes in Treasury yields and liquidity conditions following the Federal Reserve's rate hike on Sept. 16, which raised the target range to 3.75% to 4%. A sustained decline in energy costs could alleviate some price pressures, but the G7's plan alone does not guarantee a shift in monetary policy. The 100 million barrels are part of a larger commitment made in March, which pledged 400 million barrels from emergency reserves due to Middle East disruptions. US diesel prices were already declining before the G7 announcement, averaging $6.382 per gallon on Sept. 28, down 14.7 cents from the previous week. The upcoming price readings will help assess the plan's effectiveness. The G7 is also working to improve refinery utilization and coordinate maintenance to enhance diesel availability. Investors will receive the next US price reading on Oct. 6, and the IEA will report on the plan's implementation and market impact within 20 days. For Bitcoin, falling fuel prices could lower inflation expectations and bond yields, but without this effect, cheaper diesel may not significantly impact crypto liquidity.
