Bitcoin Privacy Risks Highlighted by Cake Wallet COO
One transaction can jeopardize years of discreet Bitcoin activity, warned Cake Wallet's COO Seth for Privacy on the Bitcoin Rails podcast. He emphasized the necessity of privacy for Bitcoin users, particularly in the West, following the imprisonment of Samourai Wallet developers last year. Recently, the U.S. Department of Treasury abandoned two crypto surveillance proposals, benefiting privacy advocates. Seth explained that spending no-KYC coins alongside KYC coins can link non-KYC Bitcoin to a user's identity due to UTXO management. Bitcoin wallets consist of separate unspent transaction outputs (UTXOs), and combining them in transactions can lead to privacy breaches. He noted that while citizens in the global South have faced oppressive states, Western users may need to experience discomfort to appreciate privacy's importance. However, attitudes are shifting, with increasing awareness of privacy issues in the last five to six years. Cake Wallet, which supports Bitcoin's Lightning Network for enhanced speed, cost-effectiveness, and privacy, also accommodates other cryptocurrencies like Monero. Seth expressed a desire for Bitcoin's privacy to improve to the point where it rivals Monero's, preferring a widely used currency with strong privacy over a niche tool.
