Bitcoin Protected Against Quantum Threat with Three New Mechanisms

By: blogtienao.com|11/08/2026 06:28:30

Bitcoin Core developer Cory Fields has proposed three new mechanisms: Quantum Landmines, Staked Auction, and Sats Auction, aimed at mitigating the risk of Bitcoin theft by quantum computers. These mechanisms require individuals wishing to spend Bitcoin to collateralize an equivalent amount of Bitcoin they intend to use, creating financial risk for attackers. With Quantum Landmines, Bitcoin owners can create cryptographic proofs to verify ownership. If an attacker uses a quantum computer to steal Bitcoin, the owner of a valid proof can claim the attacker’s collateral. Staked Auction and Sats Auction are designed for Bitcoin whose private keys may have been lost, allowing third parties to compete for the attacker’s collateral. The Staked Auction model even proposes permanently burning the vulnerable Bitcoin. Quantum risk remains a long-term threat, and Fields emphasizes that all three mechanisms are still in the conceptual stage and require further research before they can be implemented.
