California Meme Coin Bill AB2409 Passes State Legislature Awaiting Governor's Signature

The California "meme coin" regulatory bill AB 2409 has passed votes in both the California Assembly and Senate and is now submitted to the governor's office for signature. The bill prohibits California public officials and government employees from issuing meme coins and, starting January 1, 2027, bans digital asset service providers from offering meme coin trading services to California residents if those coins are issued or co-launched by federal officials or state and local public officials. If signed by the governor, AB 2409 will become one of the first state-level regulations in the United States to restrict the issuance of meme coins by political figures.
