Cerebras Wafer Products Have a Lifespan of Only Two Years
A semiconductor research organization, Culper, has expressed that Cerebras's Wafer Scale Engine (WSE) and routing architecture can address yield issues, but it is uncertain how long they will last in actual operation. Culper points out that Cerebras's design requires a significant amount of redundant interconnections to accommodate manufacturing defects, and these BEOL (Back End of Line) routings may increase the risk of TDDB (Time-Dependent Dielectric Breakdown) in effective area, leading to short-circuit problems. Short circuits are more dangerous than open circuits in this design, as variations in dielectric layer thickness may cause interconnection failures to concentrate in specific areas. It remains unclear how Cerebras detects short circuits and avoids using faulty interconnections. In summary, the organization believes that CBRS wafers will fail after approximately two years of use, which poses a destructive impact on the company's business.
