Elizabeth Warren May Take Control of the Senate Banking Committee. Trump and the Crypto Industry Will Be in the Crosshairs

Democrat Elizabeth Warren may soon gain significantly more influence over the American financial sector. Following the Democratic Party's victory in the U.S. midterm elections, the senator from Massachusetts is considered the leading candidate to chair the Senate Banking Committee.

This new role would provide her with greater staff resources, the ability to summon witnesses for hearings, request documents, and conduct investigations, as well as increased influence over legislative work. Among potential targets would be banks, private equity funds, and cryptocurrency companies. Warren may take particular interest in the decision to approve a banking license for a company linked to Donald Trump.

According to Reuters, Warren is widely regarded as the leading Democratic candidate to chair the committee in January 2027, when the new Congress begins its work. This would signify a significant shift in the balance of power in Washington. The politician has long criticized Wall Street and has called for stricter oversight of financial institutions and the cryptocurrency market.

World Liberty Financial in Warren's Crosshairs

One of the likely areas of interest for Warren will be the decision by the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC), the U.S. agency overseeing banks, regarding the approval of a banking license for World Liberty Financial. This cryptocurrency venture is co-founded by Donald Trump and his family. According to a Reuters source familiar with the senator's plans, Warren may demand explanations regarding the regulator's decision made in August.

The issue has been a point of contention for the Democrat for months. As early as January 2026, Warren warned of a conflict of interest related to World Liberty Financial's application. She pointed out that the regulator operating under the president's administration would be considering an application from a company linked to the president himself.

After the OCC approved the application, Warren and other senators announced plans to introduce legislation aimed at limiting the ability of public officials to control banking institutions through the president, vice president, and their immediate family members. The Ending Presidential Corruption in Banking Act shows that the dispute surrounding World Liberty Financial could become one of the more significant topics of the new term.

Warren has long been one of the most skeptical politicians regarding cryptocurrencies in the U.S. Senate. We have previously described her approach to regulating the digital asset market on BitHub.pl. Taking the helm of the committee could enhance her influence over the shaping of future regulations concerning the industry.

Investigations into the Trump Administration and CFPB

Warren's plans are not limited to cryptocurrencies. According to Reuters, the senator may also investigate mass layoffs of federal employees in financial agencies and actions by the administration aimed at closing the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB). This agency focuses on consumer protection in the financial services market, which Warren helped establish after the 2008 financial crisis.

For years, Warren has criticized institutions that she believes exploit their position at the expense of customers. Her political activity has grown, among other things, from research on consumer bankruptcies. In an interview with Reuters in December 2025, she mentioned that while analyzing the situation of indebted households, she recognized the scale of problems related not only to job loss or illness but also to unfair practices by creditors.

Her previous actions have yielded concrete results. Following pressure from the senator, in 2021, major banks reduced overdraft fees on accounts. Warren also conducted tough hearings with Wells Fargo executives John Stumpf and Tim Sloan, who ultimately left their positions after a series of scandals at the institution.

However, the Trump administration defends its actions regarding the CFPB. Its representatives argue that the agency excessively regulates the credit market, raising costs for Americans. The White House also opposes investigations that it describes as politically motivated. This position indicates that any actions by Warren could lead to further disputes between Congress and the president's administration.

Warren Promises Bipartisan Cooperation

Despite her confrontational approach to Wall Street, the senator declares that she intends to seek agreement with Republicans in selected areas. One of these is housing availability. Warren has assisted this year in working on bipartisan legislative solutions concerning the real estate market. She has also collaborated with politicians from the other side of the aisle on initiatives related to the export control of advanced semiconductors and technology.

In an op-ed published in TIME magazine, Warren presented her conclusions from the midterm elections and announced that Democrats should use their new majority to combat high living costs and corporate abuses. She also emphasized that she is ready to work with any Republican willing to address the needs of American voters.

However, this does not mean a softening of her stance towards the largest financial institutions and technology companies. The senator has warned that representatives of Big Tech, Wall Street, and large corporations should prepare for tough questions from Congress.

The final distribution of positions in committees will be determined in the coming weeks. Although Warren has not yet been formally elected as chair of the Senate Banking Committee, Reuters identifies her as the leading candidate for the position. For the cryptocurrency sector, this means the prospect of more decisive oversight from one of the most critical figures in American politics regarding the industry.
