Ethereum Completes Fix for Glamsterdam Vulnerability
The Ethereum development team has fixed a vulnerability in the Glamsterdam upgrade that could allow staking deposits to be transferred to incorrect accounts. After concerns were raised that Ether (ETH) meant for validators could be attributed to block builder accounts, the team merged a proposal (PR #5736) to separate the deposits of validators and builders into the official specification. This proposal was put on hold on the 19th but was re-adopted a week later. Glamsterdam introduces a built-in proposer-builder separation (ePBS) that separates the roles of block creators and validators, ensuring that deposits are accurately attributed to their respective accounts. Researchers reported an issue where deposits from builders and validators using the same public key could be incorrectly aggregated. In an attack scenario, a malicious operator could submit a deposit for builder registration and then deposit ETH to create a new validator with the same key, resulting in both deposits being attributed to the builder account. However, this risk only occurs with deposits pending processing at the time of the hard fork transition. The development team has changed the handling method to distinguish deposits based on withdrawal credentials and has added tests to prevent the recurrence of errors. Glamsterdam was activated on the Sepolia testnet on the 6th, but the application to the Hudi testnet scheduled for the 26th has been postponed.
