Hive Appeals to European Commission Over Swedish Bitcoin Mining VAT Dispute
Hive Digital Technologies, a Bitcoin mining company, has lodged a complaint with the European Commission regarding the Swedish Tax Agency's decision to reclassify the data center services of its two Swedish subsidiaries as self-mining operations. This reclassification is retroactive to 2022, which excludes these operations from VAT collection, potentially requiring the subsidiaries to return previously refunded input VAT. Hive argues that its subsidiaries provide computing power services to specified clients under contract, which should be considered taxable activities. The Swedish court refused to refer the matter to the Court of Justice of the European Union, and Hive stated that the court did not provide a reason for its refusal, thus submitting the dispute to the European Commission.
