Korean Retail Investors Lose 23 Trillion Won in Two Months, Single Stock Leveraged ETFs Under Scrutiny
Since the launch of single stock leveraged exchange-traded products in May this year, Korean investors have lost approximately 23 trillion won (about 1.7 billion USD) between May 27 and August 14. This is the first time that South Korea's financial regulators have disclosed the overall loss scale of such highly leveraged single stock products. The data only involves 10 major Korean brokerage firms and does not cover the total losses of all investors. Since July, regulators have begun to restrict trading of leveraged single stock products, including banning the listing of new products, raising minimum cash margin requirements, and requiring investors to undergo specialized training. This indicates a significant shift in South Korea's regulatory policy within less than two months, from encouraging the launch of related products in May to restricting expansion starting in July.
