On-Chain Analysis Tools for Cryptocurrencies: How to Read SSR and Stablecoin Capitalization

On-chain analysis tools for cryptocurrencies help assess not only the price of Bitcoin but also the hidden liquidity of the market. One such indicator is the Stablecoin Supply Ratio, or SSR: it shows how much purchasing power stablecoins have relative to the market capitalization of BTC.

    • SSR has no eternal boundaries: as the stablecoin market grows, its <> and <> levels gradually shift.
    • Historically, values below 14-15 often coincide with market bottom zones and precede strong rallies.
    • A low SSR does not in itself trigger a reversal: the indicator can remain at extreme levels for a long time if the market is waiting for a catalyst.

For the crypto market, SSR is important because stablecoins act as a kind of <>. The larger their market capitalization relative to Bitcoin, the greater the potential demand that can return to riskier assets. However, potential and actual purchases are different things: a transaction on the blockchain occurs only when a stablecoin holder actually decides to exchange them for a token or another asset.

What is On-Chain Analysis and On-Chain Data

On-chain analysis is the assessment of the market based on data recorded on the blockchain. Unlike the usual view of a price chart, it shows what is happening inside the network: who is transferring coins, how the activity of addresses changes, whether transaction volumes are increasing, and where liquidity is accumulating.

On-chain data includes transactions, addresses, fees, transfer volumes, coin movements between wallets and exchanges, coin ages, stablecoin issuance, and other records that can be verified on the blockchain. They are needed to better understand the behavior of market participants, assess demand, selling pressure, and the likelihood of a phase change in the cycle.

Technical analysis primarily works with price and volume on the chart. On-chain analysis looks deeper: not only at where the price has gone but also at what actions network participants are taking behind that movement. Therefore, it is especially useful when distinguishing short-term noise from real accumulation, capitulation, or overheating.

Key On-Chain Metrics for Finding Maxima and Minima

    • SSR: compares the market capitalization of Bitcoin with the market capitalization of stablecoins. Low values indicate that stablecoin holders have more potential purchasing power; high values indicate that there is less liquidity to support growth.
    • NVT: compares the network capitalization with transaction volume. An excessively high NVT often hints at overheating, while lower values with active network activity may indicate undervaluation.
    • MVRV: compares market capitalization with realized capitalization. A high MVRV is usually associated with zones of significant unrealized profit and peak risk, while a low MVRV is linked to periods of undervaluation and bottom formation.
    • SOPR: shows whether coins are sold on average at a profit or a loss. A drop below 1 often reflects capitulation, while a return above 1 may indicate a recovery in demand.
    • NUPL: assesses unrealized profit and loss of market participants. Euphoria zones tend to appear closer to maxima, while fear and capitulation zones are near minima.
    • Puell Multiple: shows how miner revenues differ from historical norms. High values may accompany market overheating, while low values indicate periods of pressure on miners and potential bottoms.
    • Active Addresses: help understand whether real network usage is increasing. If the price rises without supporting activity, the movement may be less sustainable.
    • Transaction Volume: shows how much value is passing through the network. An increase in volume along with price usually confirms participant interest, while weak volume makes rallies less convincing.
    • Average Coin Age: helps assess whether old coins are moving. If long-term holders start actively moving assets, it may increase the risk of sales.

Platforms for On-Chain Analysis and Tool Selection

Specialized platforms are used to work with on-chain data. They collect raw data from blockchains, clean it, build metrics, and display dynamics in the form of graphs, dashboards, and signals.

    • Glassnode: suitable for analyzing market cycles, the behavior of long-term and short-term holders, MVRV, SOPR, NUPL, and other major metrics.
    • CryptoQuant: often used to track flows to and from exchanges, miner activity, stablecoin reserves, and the behavior of large participants.
    • Santiment: combines on-chain metrics with social and behavioral data, helping to assess not only coin movements but also market sentiment.
    • IntoTheBlock: focuses on address analytics, concentration of large holders, wallet profitability, and network activity.
    • Nansen: useful for analyzing wallets, DeFi activity, NFT segments, and capital movement between addresses.

Choosing a platform is best done based on several criteria: user-friendly interface, necessary metrics, support for different blockchains, depth of historical data, subscription cost, availability of free access, quality of ready-made analytics, and the ability to quickly compare several indicators with each other.

How to Apply On-Chain Analysis in Trading and Investments

On-chain analysis helps identify accumulation, overheating, and capitulation zones. For example, a low SSR along with an increase in stablecoin capitalization may indicate that there is liquidity in the market. A low MVRV or SOPR below 1 may indicate stress and selling at a loss, while excessively high values of MVRV, NUPL, or Puell Multiple indicate the risk of a late-phase rally.

On-chain metrics are useful for price forecasting but do not work as precise timers. A successful example is September 2020, when the SSR dropped to 9.55, after which Bitcoin increased more than sixfold over six months. The limitation is clearly visible in 2025-2026: the SSR remained low for a long time, but a rapid turnaround was restrained by the macroeconomic background, ETF flows, and slowing growth of stablecoin capitalization.

    • Advantage of on-chain analysis: it relies on verifiable blockchain data, not just price.
    • Advantage of on-chain analysis: it helps to see the behavior of holders, miners, exchanges, and large wallets.
    • Advantage of on-chain analysis: it better reveals phases of the market cycle—accumulation, overheating, capitulation, and recovery.
    • Disadvantage of on-chain analysis: metrics can remain in extreme zones for a long time and not provide an exact entry or exit moment.
    • Disadvantage of on-chain analysis: part of the liquidity flows through ETFs, fiat channels, and traditional markets, so it is not always visible on the blockchain.
    • Disadvantage of on-chain analysis: indicators need to be read in the context of price, macroeconomics, and sentiment; otherwise, the signal can be easily overestimated.

Why There Is No Universal Standard for SSR

The main difficulty in working with SSR is the absence of fixed thresholds. It is not possible to state once that a value above a certain mark is always "expensive," and below another is always "cheap." The stablecoin market is growing, its structure is changing, and new use cases are emerging, including decentralized financial services, transactions in Ethereum ecosystems, and operations with NFTs. Therefore, absolute levels of SSR drift over time.

It is much more useful to look not only at the number itself but also at its position relative to its own historical extremes over the past 1-2 years. Additionally, normalized versions of the metric can be applied: Z-Score, Bollinger Bands, and other smoothing methods. Thus, SSR becomes not a separate signal but part of a liquidity analysis system.

    When SSR Becomes High

From March to October 2018, the SSR remained in the range of 50-80. The market capitalization of BTC at that time was approximately $100-130 billion, while the total capitalization of stablecoins barely exceeded $2-3 billion. In other words, stablecoins could theoretically buy back only about 1.25-2% of the Bitcoin supply.

Such a liquidity reserve was too small to support a strong growth. The market continued to decline: from $11,500 in March to $3,200 in December 2018. SSR values above 50 consistently indicated that there was almost no fuel for growth, and liquidity in stablecoins remained weak.

By November 2021, when BTC reached an all-time high of around $69,000, the SSR rose again, but not to the levels of 2018, instead hovering around 17-20. This is an important detail: the same "high" SSR looks different in different years because the stablecoin market has grown significantly during this time.

    What Low SSR Indicates

Values below 14-15 in the market's history have repeatedly coincided with phases where a bottom was formed and conditions for further growth were created. In September 2020, the SSR dropped to a then-record low of 9.55. Bitcoin was trading around $10,000, and the issuance of stablecoins was rapidly increasing. Theoretically, they could buy back more than 10% of the BTC supply.

Six months after this minimum, Bitcoin rose above $60,000. The growth was about 600%. A similar picture was observed in mid-2021: after a correction from $64,000 to $30,000, the SSR moved into the range of 12-14. The purchasing power of stablecoins was sufficient for the market to receive support, followed by a rally to a new high of around $69,000 in November 2021.

Key SSR Points in Market History

    • March–October 2018: BTC was priced around $11,500 at the beginning of the period, with a market capitalization of approximately $100–130 billion, while the market cap of stablecoins barely exceeded $2–3 billion, and the SSR was in the range of 50–80. Stablecoins could only buy back 1.2–2% of the BTC supply, making the signal appear bearish.
    • December 2018: Bitcoin formed a cyclical bottom around $3,200, with the SSR dropping to about 25. The indicator fell mainly due to the collapse in BTC prices rather than a surge in stablecoins, resulting in a signal that was more neutral-bullish.
    • September 2020: BTC was priced around $10,000, the SSR reached 9.55, and the rapid growth of Tether and USDC emissions created a large liquidity reserve. The signal was distinctly bullish, and in the following six months, Bitcoin increased more than sixfold.
    • April 2021: BTC was around $64,500, and the SSR rose to about 17. The purchasing power of stablecoins began to deplete, leading to a warning signal.
    • June–July 2021: BTC dropped to around $30,000, and the SSR decreased to 12–14. The purchasing power of stablecoins was sufficient to support the market, after which Bitcoin rose to $69,000 within four months.
    • November 2021: BTC reached around $69,000, with the SSR in the range of 17–20. The purchasing power of stablecoins was noticeably weaker, and their growth was insufficient to offset the scale of Bitcoin's market capitalization. The signal turned bearish.
    • April 2025: BTC corrected to the $74,000 range, with the annual minimum according to TV at $74,458. The market cap of stablecoins was around $209–215 billion after rising from $188 billion in January, with the SSR at 12.9. The growth in stablecoin capitalization set an upward momentum for BTC.
    • May 2025: On May 22, Bitcoin updated its historical maximum to $112,006 according to TV. The market cap of stablecoins was around $225 billion, with an SSR of 18.86. The indicator rose from a local minimum, but purchasing power remained high.
    • August 2025: On August 14, BTC reached $124,501. The market cap of stablecoins was estimated at $248–264 billion, with an SSR of 19.2. The indicator did not increase sharply because the market cap of stablecoins was also growing rapidly.
    • October 2025: On October 6, BTC updated its maximum to $126,230. The market cap of stablecoins was around $280 billion, with an SSR of 16.54. Even at the historical peak, the indicator did not rise to extremely high values, and the stablecoin market continued to fuel the rally.
    • November 2025: On November 21, BTC dropped to $80,560. The market cap of stablecoins was around $282 billion, and the SSR fell to 10.78. Formally, this would be a bullish signal, as the purchasing power within the crypto market sharply increased.
    • December 2025: BTC traded around $88,500, the market cap of stablecoins was approximately $285 billion, and the SSR was around 11.3. Throughout 2025, the market cap of stablecoins grew by 52% — from $188 billion to $285 billion.
    • January 2026: BTC moved in the range of $89,000 to $98,200, with the maximum of the period occurring on January 14. The market cap of stablecoins was around $286 billion, with an SSR of 12.84.
    • February 2026: On February 6, BTC fell to an annual minimum of $59,970 amid prospects of military actions by the US and Israel against Iran and geopolitical turbulence. The market cap of stablecoins held around $284–285 billion, and the SSR dropped to 8.96 — a multi-month low.
    • March–June 2026: BTC remained in volatile consolidation in the range of $60,000–80,000. On June 26, the price was around $59,400, the average market cap of stablecoins was close to $289 billion, and the SSR was 9.87. The signal remained near the lows.

Why a low SSR does not guarantee a reversal for Bitcoin

Low SSR looks like a strong bullish argument, but it does not, by itself, turn the stablecoin supply into real purchases. Several factors influence this:

    • SSR shows potential but does not pull the trigger. Stablecoins worth about $285 billion could theoretically buy over 23% of the total BTC supply, but a catalyst is needed: an event, a change in sentiment, or an improvement in market conditions.
    • The dynamics of stablecoin capitalization affect the strength of the signal. In 2025, the figure rose by 52%, from $188 billion to $285 billion, but from January to June 2026, it slightly decreased—by about 0.3%, from $286 billion to $285 billion. Over the last 30 days, there was a decline of 2.5%.
    • There is "dry powder," but new supply is minimal. In absolute terms, the liquidity supply remains large, but it is already shrinking in certain segments. When adding the context of stablecoin capitalization to SSR, the picture becomes more cautious: part of the liquidity begins to leave the system.
    • The macroeconomic backdrop may hinder a turnaround. The conflict in the Strait of Hormuz, rising inflation, expectations of an interest rate hike by the Fed, and high Treasury yields support a risk-off environment. In such an environment, capital exits risky assets, even if on-chain metrics look attractive.
    • The influence of traditional financial instruments is not reflected in SSR. In 2024-2026, after the emergence of spot Bitcoin ETFs, BTC prices are more influenced by ETF flows, hedge fund positions, margin requirements, and correlation with the stock market. These channels can operate directly through fiat and may not be captured by SSR.

    How to Read SSR Now

The current picture—SSR around 10, stablecoin capitalization approximately $285 billion, and BTC around $60,000—indicates record internal purchasing power in the crypto market. If the macroeconomic backdrop stabilizes and capital begins to flow back into risky assets, this liquidity supply could support a Bitcoin recovery of 25-50% or more, as has happened after periods of low SSR.

However, a low SSR is not a standalone signal for an immediate turnaround. It can remain at extreme lows for weeks and months if geopolitics, monetary policy, and outflows through ETFs continue to pressure the market.

The slowdown in stablecoin capitalization growth deserves special attention. If it begins to decline actively, as it did in 2022, SSR will lose some of its strength as a bullish indicator: the denominator of the formula will "leak" along with the numerator.

To avoid misleading interpretations of SSR, it is better to read it alongside three things:

    • SSR: shows the ratio of Bitcoin capitalization to stablecoin capitalization.
    • Absolute stablecoin capitalization: helps understand how large the liquidity supply is within the crypto market.
    • Direction of change in stablecoin capitalization: indicates whether new liquidity is entering or gradually leaving the market.

Without this context, the indicator in 2026 could formally say "buy," while liquidity slowly exits the market through channels that the metric itself does not see.
