OpenAI Implements Watermarks for ChatGPT in the EU
OpenAI has begun rolling out invisible watermark technology for the text responses of its ChatGPT and Codex models in the EU. Over the coming weeks, this feature will become available to users in the European Union, and API customers will be able to voluntarily enable watermarks for individual models. The technology, developed in response to the EU's Artificial Intelligence Act, will help determine whether text was generated by OpenAI's systems. The textGrain system adds an invisible statistical signal to the model's word choices, while a specialized detector analyzes the text to detect this signal. With a false positive rate of 1%, the detector identified the watermark in 80% of excerpts of 200 tokens. OpenAI noted that the technology provides only a limited signal about the text's origin and does not identify the author. The watermark does not indicate that the text was written by a human. OpenAI has opened applications for access to the detector for approved researchers, planning to improve watermark detection.
