Peter Todd has joined the MARA Foundation as the lead maintainer of Slipstream, a private Bitcoin mempool service. In this role, Todd will develop and manage the service, which allows users to send bitcoin transactions directly to MARA Pool without using Bitcoin's public network. This service gained attention after hackers exploited Coldcard hardware wallets in July, resulting in the theft of over 115 million dollars in user funds. Transactions through Slipstream remain private until confirmed in a block, protecting users' public keys from exposure. Todd expressed his enthusiasm for using Slipstream as a platform for experimental development and protocol innovation. Slipstream first gained recognition in 2024 for its large Ordinals inscriptions and has been utilized in research projects like Quantum Safe Bitcoin and Binohash. Todd is a veteran Bitcoin Core contributor, known for co-authoring BIP 125, creating OpenTimestamps, and launching Libre Relay in 2024, which features looser relay rules for non-standard transactions. He advocates for mempool policies that align with market demands for mining.
