Ripple Enters Leveraged ETF Financial Market
Ripple is expanding its leveraged exchange-traded fund (ETF) finance as a new source of revenue. According to the Wall Street Journal, Ripple is emerging as a key player providing swap financing for leveraged ETFs, adopting a strategy to secure high fees through this. Leveraged ETFs are designed to amplify the daily returns of their underlying assets by 2 or 3 times, with asset managers utilizing derivatives such as total return swaps (TRS). There are 593 leveraged ETFs in the United States, with total assets exceeding $256 billion. Last year, Ripple entered the swap financing business by acquiring prime brokerage firm Hidden Road for $1.25 billion. Currently, Ripple Prime is trading with several ETF managers and plans to expand its client base to include hedge funds and other asset managers. Recently, Ripple Prime announced that it is providing prime brokerage and clearing financial services to hedge fund Brevan Howard. High fees are central to the business, with certain ETFs paying an annualized fee of 8%. However, swap financing could pose a risk of loss for Ripple due to extreme fluctuations in the prices of underlying assets. Ripple's expansion into leveraged ETF finance demonstrates a shift from digital asset infrastructure to traditional finance.
