SEC Commissioner Hester Peirce regrets delay in U.S. crypto regulation
Hester Peirce, a crypto-friendly U.S. SEC Commissioner, expressed regret over not establishing cryptocurrency regulatory policy sooner ahead of her departure on Oct. 2. She noted that the U.S. crypto industry suffered due to unnecessary regulatory battles, suggesting that energy should have been directed towards creating a regulatory framework that protects investors and developers. Peirce emphasized that this would have deterred exploitation of the crypto label. She highlighted the importance of addressing fundamental issues, particularly ensuring developers feel protected from liability when their tools are misused for illegal activities. Peirce also called for policymakers to consider how to develop and apply new cryptocurrency technology while safeguarding Americans' personal data. After nearly nine years at the SEC, she will join Regent University School of Law as an associate professor in November.
