SpaceX and Starlink's X Accounts Hacked, $135,000 Stolen in Meme Coin Rug Pull Scam
SpaceX and Starlink's X accounts have been hacked, resulting in the theft of $135,000 in a meme coin rug pull scam.
It has been revealed that the ongoing issue of prominent account hacks in the cryptocurrency market has finally extended to SpaceX, a major player in space development, and its satellite communication service, Starlink.
A hacker group illegally took over the official X accounts of both companies and launched a promotion for a fake meme coin called "SCATMAN," which appears to be inspired by Samuel Altman. By reposting targeted content from both accounts, they quickly fabricated credibility for the project.
The hackers issued a token called $SCATMAN and promoted it after hacking the accounts of @SpaceXAI and @Starlink. They subsequently issued 10 trillion SCATMAN tokens and sold them all for 59 ETH (approximately $108,000). Another wallet controlled by the hackers sold 59.28 million SCATMAN for 14.7 ETH (approximately $27,000). In total, the hackers made about $125,000 in profit.
Hacker's wallet addresses: 0xfee50d4ce48f2d05f520ce04c875647e4870a8ba 0xdd9f6d3e16ebda7f35cb694ceadb50af3eebba89
According to an investigation by the on-chain analysis platform Lookonchain, the attackers, posing as developers, pre-issued 10 trillion SCATMAN tokens. Due to the account abuse, the token's market capitalization temporarily surged to over $2 million (approximately 320 million yen). The hackers then executed a rug pull, selling all their holdings on the market, causing the token's value to plummet to nearly zero.
Cleverly Dispersed Fund Movement Trails
Tracking data on the blockchain revealed that the hackers had primarily dispersed the stolen funds into two cryptocurrency wallets.
Main Wallet: Sold all 10 trillion tokens immediately after the post, earning 59 ETH (approximately $108,000). Sub Wallet: Another address closely related to the same perpetrator exchanged an additional 59.28 million SCATMAN for 14.7 ETH (approximately $27,000).
The illicit profits from the two addresses amount to approximately $135,000 (around 21.9 million yen) in Ethereum (ETH). Currently, SpaceX and Starlink have regained control of their accounts, and all related fake posts and reposts have been removed from the timeline.
The History of Influencer Exploitation Becoming Common Practice
This incident highlights the typical crime pattern of "account compromise → fake token issuance → sell-off" that has been rampant in the cryptocurrency industry in recent years. Influential individuals and organizations have previously fallen victim to similar attacks.
Victims Among Politicians and Dignitaries: When the account of former Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir was hacked, it resulted in a massive loss of $1.7 million. Exploitation of Notable Influencers: In the case of "Roaring Kitty (Keith Gill)," a dormant account was compromised, leading to over $600,000 being stolen in a Solana-based meme coin scam in just 30 minutes. Involvement of General Companies: Even brands not directly related to cryptocurrency, such as the official account of the major compression software "WinRAR," have been targeted.
The structure of temporarily inflating prices by exploiting the social credibility of celebrities, allowing only whales (large holders) and hackers to secure profits while individual investors bear all the losses, underscores the necessity for enhanced security measures on platforms and vigilance from investors themselves in the future.
