Bitcoin Every 15 Minutes: The Express Bet That Is Shaking Prediction Markets
The casino to the minute. Polymarket, Kalshi, and Robinhood offer bets on the price of Bitcoin every fifteen minutes, with Polymarket even going down to five. These contracts << BTC Up or Down >> renew continuously day and night, pushing the crypto segment of predictive markets to a record high.
The principle is based on a price between $0 and $1, an oracle that designates the winner, and fees that nibble at each wager. Stanford researchers have also spotted signs of manipulation, while France has blocked Polymarket since July.
Key Points
- Each share costs less than a dollar and pays out one dollar if the price direction is correctly guessed.
- On Polymarket, accounts driven by algorithms account for more than half of the trades in these short formats.
- A study conducted between Stanford and Singapore accuses 821 accounts of having tilted the balance.
- Blocked in France since the summer, Polymarket is contesting the ANJ's decision in court.
Bitcoin Up or Down, the Mechanics of a 15-Minute Bet
Open a << BTC Up or Down >> page on Polymarket. A countdown, a << price to beat >>, and two buttons occupy the screen. The price to beat is the Bitcoin price at the opening of the window. You bet on Up if you think it will be matched or exceeded at the close, on Down otherwise.
Each share is bought between $0 and $1 and pays exactly $1 if the prediction is correct, nothing otherwise. A << Up >> share priced at 73 cents thus corresponds to a 73% chance of an increase in the eyes of the market. This is the implied probability, and it moves with each order placed until the last second.
Finally, the verdict depends on an external arbiter. Polymarket entrusts this role to Chainlink, whose oracle (a service that transmits market prices to the blockchain) publishes a BTC/USD stream. Kalshi and Robinhood, whose contracts go through licensed exchanges like KalshiEX, use the BRTI index from CF Benchmarks averaged over the last minute of the window. The winner collects. Then the next window opens, up to 96 times a day in fifteen-minute format.
Crypto Prediction Markets, A Record Driven by Machines
Bloomberg noted in its newsletter on October 22 a historic peak in trading event contracts related to crypto, driven by the five and fifteen-minute bets from Polymarket, Kalshi, and Robinhood.
The rise has been meteoric. Polymarket opened its first short crypto markets in September 2025, then the five-minute format in early February 2026. According to an analysis published in April by Dune, the latter handled about $2.3 billion between February 15 and March 30, compared to $795 million for the fifteen-minute version. Bloomberg counted up to $60 million traded some days on these short bets by mid-March, while a bet on the daily close of Bitcoin often caps below a million.
In reality, the small bettor has little weight. Dune attributes to automated addresses about 55% of the volume of five-minute markets and 62% of those at fifteen minutes. Casual and regular traders represent 4 to 5%. The five-minute format saw 6,189 robot addresses align about 56 million transactions in a month, compared to 166,000 for 43,898 casual addresses.
Moreover, Polymarket takes a cut. The platform has charged fees to takers (buyers who accept the displayed price) on these short-cycle markets since January 2026. Its documentation gives for the crypto category the formula 0.07 × p × (1 -- p) per share, with p being the price paid. A share at 50 cents thus incurs 1.75 cents in fees, or 3.5% of the wager. The rate peaks when the outcome is most uncertain. Its fast crypto markets generated $17.8 million in net fees between January 7 and March 30, according to Dune.
Express Bets on Bitcoin, the Outlet for a Pressured Generation
Who clicks these buttons every five minutes? Part of the answer lies in the Planning & Progress study by the insurer Northwestern Mutual, published on March 9, 2026. Nearly a third of 18-29 year-olds surveyed say they are placing, or considering placing, money in sports betting and prediction markets. Eight out of ten believe these risky assets will lead them to their goals faster.
Bloomberg refers to "financial nihilism", a term circulating in the United States to describe the sentiment that saving wisely will no longer be enough to buy a home. Jon Lourie, founder of the research firm Polyfactual, has moved from political betting to sports, then to crypto betting in 15 minutes. He found this speed "addictive". "It's as if people want to arrive at the resolution time faster and faster," he confided to Bloomberg in March. He does not rule out the imminent arrival of one-minute markets.
The format mirrors the gambling loop, where each verdict immediately calls for a new bet. However, these contracts fall under the jurisdiction of the CFTC (the federal regulator of derivatives) in the United States, which launched a public consultation in March on the regulation of event contracts.

Polymarket Faces Stanford Study on Manipulation
On June 30, David Dai and Ruizhe Jia (Stanford) and Shihao Yu (Singapore Management University) published a study on approximately 16,000 five-minute bitcoin contracts from Polymarket, from the launch of the format on February 12 until April. They describe bursts of purchases on Binance's spot market that shift the bet in the final seconds before closure. The authors attribute $8.2 million in gains to 821 accounts out of about 243,000 participants and estimate that 93% of the losses hit individuals. Manipulation is "largely absent" from the fifteen-minute contracts, according to the study's summary.
Subsequently, Polymarket changed its rules on August 7. Its Up or Down crypto markets now resolve based on an average price calculated by Chainlink rather than a snapshot. The average runs over 30 seconds for the five-minute format and 60 seconds for the 15-minute format.
Polymarket Banned in France and Under Scrutiny in Europe
French bettors no longer have access to it anyway. The National Gaming Authority (ANJ) ordered internet service providers to block the platform on July 16, 2026. The regulator had classified all predictive betting sites as unauthorized gambling sites as early as February, then sent a formal notice to Polymarket in June. It cites the lack of identity verification for players and weather bets suspected of being manipulated, which are under investigation by the Paris prosecutor's office. Polymarket filed an appeal on August 21. No judgment has been announced since.
Elsewhere in Europe, the door remains equally narrow. A contract that pays $1 or nothing depending on the direction of bitcoin at five minutes closely resembles a binary option, a product whose sale to individuals has been banned in the Union since 2018. The European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA) made the connection in its risk report on September 10, where it concluded that Polymarket and Kalshi are selling their event contracts without the required European authorization.
Warning: Polymarket is banned in France. The National Gaming Authority ordered the blocking of the platform on July 16, 2026, due to lack of approval. Betting from France on an unauthorized site remains illegal and offers no protection in case of disputes.
