Coinbase Urges Bitcoin Developers to Start Quantum Migration Now
Coinbase is urging Bitcoin developers to prepare for the quantum-computing threat, emphasizing that the transition to quantum-resistant cryptography must begin immediately. In a blog post, Coinbase, which holds about 5% of all Bitcoin, described the shift as a complex, multi-year process. The company warned that waiting for a confirmed quantum threat would leave insufficient time for response. The main concern is that a powerful quantum computer could derive private keys from public keys, potentially draining wallets. Coinbase outlined that any solution must protect both existing and new coins, fit within Bitcoin's limited block space, and accommodate both ordinary wallets and institutional custody. The exchange proposed a flexible design allowing for gradual integration of new signature systems and suggested a staged approach where funds could be accessed with either classical or quantum-safe keys during the transition. Additionally, Coinbase highlighted the need for any rescue mechanisms for dormant or lost coins to be quantum-safe. This initiative follows Coinbase's ongoing warnings about quantum risks, including the establishment of a quantum advisory board and a commitment of 15 million dollars towards quantum-proofing Bitcoin.
