Iran's Hardliners Demand Greater Costs from the U.S., Negotiation Stance May Become More Rigid
After the Republican Party, led by Trump, suffered a significant defeat in the U.S. midterm elections, Iran's hardliners believe that the U.S. government is under domestic political pressure. They are demanding that Washington pay a higher price before ending the war with Iran and oppose any compromises by the Iranian negotiating team with the U.S. Iran's Supreme Leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, has warned against showing any signs of yielding, while hardline media are calling for continued pressure, arguing that Trump should not be allowed to end the war easily. Analysts from the International Crisis Group point out that the election results may strengthen Tehran's negotiating position, making it less willing to make concessions on its nuclear program. Iran has previously put forward seven conditions, including ending the war, receiving compensation, U.S. troop withdrawal, and lifting sanctions, and has demanded that these conditions be met before opening the Strait of Hormuz. Despite the hardliners advocating for continued resistance, analysts believe that Iran's leadership still hopes to end the war through negotiations while retaining regional deterrence and strategic leverage. As military operations become stalemated, progress in negotiations remains limited, and the risk of escalation in conflict still exists.
